Welcome to the THS College & Career Center page!  My name is Emily Nichols, the College and Career Counselor for THS.  I have been in Tomball ISD since 2007, and began my career in education in 1999.  I graduated from Sam Houston State University with a BA in Fashion Merchandising, and a minor in Business.  In 2004 I received my Masters of Education in School Counseling from Sam Houston State University.
 
I am here to meet your students college and career needs.  Students are always welcome in Cougar Corner (College & Career Center).  Parents may simply contact me and schedule an appointment.  I work with all grade levels in different areas of college and career readiness throughout each year.  Many events will be held each year for students to learn more about post high school options, careers, financial aid, and much more.  Make sure you check out the many resources I have posted for you.  The Links section is organized by area of interest with many helpful links for students and parents.
 
I am the Dual Credit Coordinator for our campus.  You will find helpful information on Dual Credit for our campus. We partner with Lone Star College, Tomball.  Our LSC Dual Credit Advisor is Erica Clark.

Camp Enterprise 2017 with the Rotary Club of Houston (for high school juniors)

Juniors,
 
Camp Enterprise is a wonderful program to help high school juniors develop a greater understanding of the Free Enterprise System.  Students gain leadership and facilitation skills, learn how to set and achieve goals, and become excited about exploring their future career options.
 
This program is free, but students must apply.  The application must be submitted by November 20, 2016.

PSAT Boot Camp with Princeton Review

Sophomores and Juniors,
 
Princeton Review is offering a 9 hour PSAT Boot Camp to help prepare you for the upcoming PSAT on October 19th.  The course will help you maximize your score, learn testing tips, pacing strategies, and more.
 
The course will be offered on October 1st, 8th, and 15th from 9 am to 12 pm.

EVENT COMING UP THIS WEEKEND! - STEM College & Career Fair

National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) is hosting a STEM College & Career Fair for students and their families.  The event is free and open to the public.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students interested in studying in areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.  More than 100 college representatives will be present to share information with students and families on STEM-focused degree programs and majors.  Students can also meet with representatives of industries in the STEM fields.

EVENT COMING UP SOON! - Who Gets In and Why

Come spend an evening learning Who Gets In and Why:  A behind-the-scenes look at the selective admissions process.  The evening will be an interactive workshop for high school students and their parents presented by Tufts University.
 
The program will highlight the various elements of a successful college application.  Topics include:
  • How do colleges evaluate a high school transcript?
  • Tips on successful essay writing and the impact of an application supplement.
  • The role of recommendations and interviews in a highly-selective admission process.
  • How to highlight "intangible" factors.

THIS Friday, September 23rd is the deadline to apply for Leadership High School with Lone Star College.  This is a great opportunity for you to get involved more in the community as well as strengthen your leadership skills.

Lunch 'n Learn for SENIORS - Lone Star College Honors College

Seniors,

Lone Star College offers students the advantage of a small college within a college experience through their Honors College.  The Honors College program provides a unique intellectual and co-curricular experience as students earn honors college credit.

In order to apply to the Honors College at Lone Star College, Tomball students must have one of the following:

  • A high school GPA of 3.5 or 4.0
  • 1150 or higher on the SAT (OLD SAT - combined math and critical reading sections) - NEW SAT score requirement TBA
  • 26 or higher composite score on the ACT
  • 3.25 GPA with 9 or more college credit hours

Qualified students who are interested in applying have many benefits of entering the program such as scholarships, early registration, small and interactive classes, Honors faculty with specialized advising, internship opportunities, honors designation on the transcript, and more.

The Lone Star College, Tomball Honors College Director, Ava Velelis will be meeting with interested seniors on Wednesday, September 21st during their lunch.  If you are interested please reply to this email or sign up through the Career Center.

Junior Achievement Offshore Technology Conference Scholarship

Scholarship opportunity for high school seniors pursuing a career in offshore oil and gas

The Junior Achievement/Offshore Technology Conference Scholarship Program is awarding eight $10,000 scholarships to students planning to work in the offshore oil and gas industry at any post-secondary education, including certificate programs, community colleges, universities, or technical education. The deadline for Houston-area high school seniors to apply is Oct. 7.

 

Eligibility requirements

  • Student must be a high school senior in the Houston-area during the 2016-2017 school year
  • Student plans to seek further education at a post-secondary education institution in the United States to pursue a job in the offshore oil and gas industry
  • Student’s education plans have been challenged due to financial issues caused by the downturn in the industry

How to apply

  • Download and complete the application (see attached document), and obtain required letters of recommendation
  • Submit the application to JA on or before 5 p.m. Oct. 7. All applications must be received by this deadline to be considered.

Scholarship winners will be selected* on or before Nov. 1. All scholarships will be paid directly to the school in the name of the awardee upon proof of admission.

Rock the PSAT!

Princeton Review is offering THS students a great opportunity to Rock the Test for the PSAT in 2016!  

Sign up for a FREE PSAT Practice Test on September 24th from 9 am to 12 pm and a FREE Scores Back Session on September 26th from 3 to 4 pm.  Students may sign up for this event in the Career Center, Rm 1102.

Students also have an opportunity to take a 9 hour Princeton Review PSAT Boot Camp.  You will learn test taking tips, pacing strategies, and much more.  The cost of the PSAT Boot Camp is $249 (using the promo code).  Please use the Promo Code for a $50 discount on the PSAT Boot Camp!  The dates for the PSAT Boot Camp are October 1, October 8, and October 15 from 9 am to 12 pm.
