Student Expectations & Rehearsal Etiquette

Tomball High Orchestra

Rehearsal Etiquette

  1. Be pared for rehearsal. Learn your part to the best of your ability. If you are not sure how your part is to be played, take it to your private teacher or schedule a time with director for help before or after school.
  2. Have all of your supplies with you to your stand. This includes your music, a PENCIL and ALL other accessories for your instrument. (rosin, mute, shoulder rest, rocstop or endpin strap, binder, pencil, your brain). Every person should have multiple pencils with them at all times.\
  3. No cell phones, chewing gum, or long nails are permitted during rehearsals or performances.
  4. Show respect for the conductor at all times. MARK your music as he/she directs. MARK problem areas on your own to help you remember the next time you play or practice at home.
  5. Be alert for bowing changes made by your section leader. Bowing changes will “travel” faster from stand to stand if you can see that a change is on its way. Try to remember to mark all bowing changes in all parts ASAP.
  6. If you are unable to attend a rehearsal, ask your stand partner or section leader if there have been any changes in the music or style changes. Simply ask to see his or her music and transfer the bowing changes into your part. All missed rehearsals should be approved by your director ahead of time.
  7. Be attentive in rehearsals; this will help to ensure the time is used effectively.
  8. Show respect for other players. Treat others as you would want to be treated if you were asked to play a difficult passage in front of everyone. DON’T stare at a soloist.
  9. Talking and playing after the director cuts you off is not permitted. Please keep your comments to yourself. Any player that chooses to talk and/or continue playing will be asked to leave the rehearsal.
  10. Be a model citizen. You are representing your family, our school, & our program. Do the right thing because it is the right thing to do!
